Dana White Supports Overtime to Take Draws Out of the UFC

The UFC has already had two pay-per-view main events end in draws this year, with neither fighter getting his hand raised in the Frankie Edgar vs Gray Maynard fight at UFC 125, or the B.J. Penn vs. Jon Fitch fight at UFC 127.UFC President Dana White wasn't satisfied with those decisions, and he'd like to do something about it: Add overtime to UFC fights.
Talking to Stephan Bonnar on The Ultimate Fighter Aftermath, White was asked whether he would favor an overtime round for fights that end in draws, just as the fights on The Ultimate Fighter have. White said he thinks that's a good idea.

"I hate draws," White said. "I think it's just such a waste of everybody's time and energy. It's something that I would definitely explore."
The big question is whether state athletic commissions would be open to allowing overtime. The Nevada State Athletic Commission sanctions the exhibition fights in The Ultimate Fighter, so that commission apparently doesn't have any principled objection to adding an extra round. But Ultimate Fighter overtime rounds come after the fighters have fought only two five-minute rounds. It would be a lot more taxing on the fighters to add an overtime round after a 25-minute war like Edgar vs. Maynard. A three-minute overtime round might make more sense.
There would still be issues left to address with an overtime round, like what would happen if one fighter wins the overtime round 10-9 but has a point deducted for committing a foul. Draws might be unavoidable in some situations, just as no contests are unavoidable in some situations.
But reducing the number of draws in MMA is a worthy goal. Two of this year's first major events had unsatisfying conclusions, and if overtime reduces such unsatisfying conclusions, it's a good thing. White should continue to explore adding overtime to the UFC.

Brock Lesnar Teaches Jimmy Fallon a Rear-Naked Choke

For the second straight week, a UFC fighter got a spot on NBC's late-night schedule, and for the second straight week it was a good PR moment for the UFC, which got to show off an engaging, likable fighter to an audience consisting largely of people who don't buy UFC pay-per-views.Words like "engaging" and "likable" haven't often been used to describe Brock Lesnar, but that's how he came across on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon, where he talked up The Ultimate Fighter and his June fight with Junior dos Santos. Then Lesnar gave Fallon a one-on-one MMA lesson.
Fallon asked Lesnar, "Could you teach me a move?" Lesnar obliged.
"In the fight world, a basic advantage you can get on your opponent is to take your opponent's back," Lesnar said. "So I'll teach you a version of the rear-naked choke."
Fallon seemed to find the term "rear-naked choke" funny, and Lesnar didn't have much time to really demonstrate anything, but Lesnar did show that he's a natural entertainer, and he read the promo for the next act effortlessly while clutching Fallon's neck.
Overall, the appearance wasn't quite as big a deal for the UFC as Jon Jones on The Tonight Show, but it was still a good piece of promotion for the UFC.

Debut double strike a "special moment" for Davies
WASHINGTON ? The Charlie Davies comeback story took a fairy tale turn Saturday evening.
Playing in a competitive match for the first time since the October 2009 car crash, Davies scored two goals, leading D.C. United to a 3-1 win.

?He deserves every ounce of credit coming back and getting two goals,? head coach Ben Olsen said after the game.
Davies entered in the 56th minute to an already fired-up D.C. United crowd. Josh Wolff had just scored to give United the lead when Davies came on as a replacement for Joseph Ngwenya, who had picked up a knock in the first half.
The chance to open his MLS account came just a few minutes later when Chris Pontius was fouled in the box.
?There was no discussion,? Davies said. ?I was taking that ball. I told Wolff right away ?I?m taking this.? And Dax came over with the ball, and he handed it to me and says ?we trust you and believe in you.? That says it all.?
This was the moment that Davies had been waiting and working for.
?I was ready for this moment,? he said. ?I?ve been waiting such a long time for this exact moment?a year and five months. so it was finally here and I knew I was ready for it. I wanted to go out and succeed, not just go out there and work hard, I wanted to play hard and make an impact, and I was able to do that.?
There were no doubts from McCarty either despite Davies? long layoff.
?His instincts are unlike anyone else I?ve ever played with,? McCarty said. ?I had a one hundred percent confidence, I knew when I gave him the ball he?d bury this, and that pretty much sealed the game for us right there.?
Davies, who had gone through so much to make it back, took a short run up, calmly slotting his shot to the right as Crew goalie Will Hesmer dove the opposite way. It sent the crowd into rapture, and his teammates mobbed him in the corner.
The delirium escalated even further when Davies added a second in the 77th minute. It was a classic Davies goal. Crew defender Chad Marshall slipped while trying to deal with a long ball, and Davies latched onto the loose ball, rounded Hesmer and slotted home for a second goal.
The RFK crowd, which had so profoundly saluted Davies the day after his horrific accident in October 2009, now saluted him for the second time on the night for much happier reasons.
?The support was overwhelming and once that final whistle blew, and I looked at the fans, I lost it emotionally because their support meant so much to me,? he said. ?Throughout this whole process of me coming back as a player, they?ve stuck with me from the beginning to the end, till now.?
While Davies will certainly enjoy his triumphant return to first-team action, he is not going to get too carried away.
?This is just the beginning, I got to keep that in mind and not get too high about this moment,? he said. ?Of course it?s a very special moment to me.?
